What Is Dual Diagnosis/Co-Occurring Treatment?
Individuals who form an addiction to drugs or alcohol while having a mental or emotional disorder fall under dual diagnosis/co-occurring treatment. While battling an addiction, certain disorders can interfere with the success of recovery, causing an inevitable relapse. Through guidance and support from professional staff, addicts can achieve victory over their drug addiction. Dual diagnosis/co-occurring treatment is common for those suffering from addiction. Close to half of those seeking treatment have a mental or emotional disorder.
We also look closely at the intersection of the emotional life of all clients (not simply those with a diagnosis of a specific mental disorder) with his or her addiction. Sometimes we find that, in addition to feeding the addiction, the substances are doing some additional work in the client’s life, for example, helping to regulate emotions (“I don’t like how I am feeling”) or dealing with the aftereffects of trauma. One of the tasks of the client in recovery is to learn skills to do whatever “additional work” has been previously done by the substances. In the absence of learning what additional work the substances may be doing in the client’s life and finding effective ways of doing that work (by skills), the client is laid open to relapse. We address these concerns both in classes (like DBT Skills Training) and in individual one-on-one sessions with a mental health professional. All clients are assigned a mental health professional with whom they generally meet with weekly (or twice weekly if more intense work is needed) to look at these aspects of their addiction and recovery.

What Symptoms Do People with Co-Occurring Disorders Experience?
Symptoms of a dual diagnosis/co-occurring disorder vary based on the individual’s history, personal life, and behavior. Each disorder presents itself in different ways, which is why co-occurring treatment for addiction is recommended by medical staff who can accurately diagnose any underlying problems during the recovery process. Detecting and diagnosing emotional and mental disorders are imperative to the success of recovery.
